The Madame C. J. Walker Theatre Center's "Jazz on the Avenue" performance series is an indelible musical icon among Indianapolis jazz fans and supporters. This series continues to be presented on the last Friday of every month since the mid-1980's. On Friday, June 25, 2010, the JOA tradition presented Indianapolis Jazz master bassist Al Finnell and his jazz ensemble in performance.
The Madame Walker Theatre Center also added a new dimension to the series that evening by including its First Annual Indiana Juneteenth Jazz Legacy Celebration. Indianapolis native and internationally renowned master jazz bassist, Dr. Larry Ridley was honored. This celebration is a part of the nationally recognized "June Is Black Music Month!" - CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH JAZZ - "Preserving Our African American Jazz Legacy!" which is sponsored by the National Association of Juneteenth Jazz Presenters (NAJJP) and the African American Jazz Caucus, Inc. - (AAJC).
Jazz On the Avenue also paid tribute to the February 9, 2010 Indiana General Assembly's unanimous passage of Indiana House Concurrent Resolution #38 introduced by the Honorable State Representative William A. Crawford. This resolution celebrates the Emancipation Proclamation and urges the establishment of "June 19th" as Juneteenth National Freedom Day in Indiana. Juneteenth is currently recognized as a state holiday or state holiday observance in 37 states, the District of Columbia and the United States Congress.
The following day on Saturday, June 26, 2010, the Crispus Attucks Museum under the directorship of Dr. Pat Payne sponsored a special reenactment at the Museum of the origin of the June 19, 1865 Juneteenth Proclamation. This proclamation was given by Union Army General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas which informed the slaves they were free from slavery. They were among the last to learn of the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln freeing the slaves earlier in 1863. Noted Indianapolis Attorney Fay Williams, a Galveston born activist gave a moving testimony regarding her experiences growing up there in Texas.
The Madam Walker Theatre Center will continue to annually acknowledge Juneteenth and Indiana Jazz Masters. The 7:00 p.m., Friday, June 24, 2011 Indiana Juneteenth Jazz Master Honorees will include trombonist/cellist Dr. David Baker, drummer Dr. Willis Kirk, bassist Mingo Jones, drummer Albert Coleman and posthumous awards to trombonist J.J. Johnson, guitarist Wes Montgomery, Noble Sissle, Ben Holliman, the Hampton Sisters and pianist Erroll Grandy. A special Historian/Photographer Award will be given to Duncan Schiedt.
On Saturday, June 25, 2011, Dr. Payne and the Crispus Attucks Museum will once again present a reenactment of the June 19, 1865 proclamation in Galveston, Texas. The actors will again perform in clothing reflecting the period. The museum is located on the campus of the historic Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School located at 1140 Dr. Martin Luther King Street, Indianapolis, IN. We encourage people to arrive early to peruse the historical artifacts. The museum will be open from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. and the performance will begin at 2:00 p.m. For further information contact the museum at (317) 226-2430.
The Indiana Juneteenth Communications Coordinator is Mr. David Williams. Ms. Betty Shaw is the liaison coordinator between MWTC/Jazz on the Avenue and the NAJJP/AAJC Partnership.
